2018 Lithology Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 375ml

We only produced a scant 50 cases of this wine this year, far too small an amount considering how great it turned out.  There’s that typical saturated to the rim deep purple color, with intense cassis, herb, and milk chocolate, bricks and forest floor, black plum pudding aromas.  In the mouth, there’s a great balance, with notable oak and vanilla notes intertwined with dense black fruits.  It’s an opulent and plush style, yet finishes with sweet grippy tannins.

2018 Lithology " Beckstoffer - Dr. Crane Vineyard " Cabernet Sauvignon 375ml

Possibly the wine of the vintage…100 points” is what Jeb Dunnuck wrote earlier this year, and it is certainly one of the greatest bottlings we’ve ever produced. Dr. George B. Crane planted his vineyard in the city of St. Helena back in 1858. Here the Cabernet comes to us typically flawless, and the wines are as such. There is blue fruits, blueberries, black plums, blackberries, and cassis to the aromas, as well as stones, mineral, chocolate, fresh tobacco, and subtle herbs. It is incredibly full-bodied, but at the same time effortlessly drinkable, with ultra-smooth tannins and a positive, long, upturned finish.  70-75% new French oak is the norm for us with Dr. Crane, and those flavors are absorbed to become a vanillin complexity, sweetness, and length. An unbelievable wine. (Less than 300 cases made.)

2018 Lithology " Beckstoffer - Dr. Crane Vineyard " Cabernet Franc 375ml

Dense, saturated, and incredibly deep purple to the rim, and black at the core, the color is mesmerizing. The nose is a heady blueberry compote, blueberry/black raspberry pie with a sweet graham cracker, floral, plum, and cherry liqueur bouquet. Mouth-filling and full-bodied, yet somehow light on its feet, with remarkably balanced tannins, and a long, sweet, chocolate, blue and black fruity finish.

"The 2018 Cabernet Franc Lithology Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard checks in at 92% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon that, like the To Kalon Cabernet Franc, was fermented in a mix of tank and puncheons and spent 20 months in 68% new French oak. It has a slightly darker, more earthy style in its black currants, dark chocolate, leafy herbs, smoked earth, and truffle-like aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied red with perfect balance, beautiful tannins, and just everything in the right place. It's going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and should keep for two decades." - 1/27/2021

At the moment, the 2018 is very nervy and tannic, which makes it hard for the Franc character to fully emerge. It will be interesting to see if this opens with time. Dried herbs, rose petal, mint and sweet tobacco feel a bit held back by the wine's imposing clout." - January 2021

2018 Lithology " Beckstoffer - To-Kalon Vineyard " Cabernet Sauvignon 375ml

“Pure perfection…100 points” is what Jeb Dunnuck wrote earlier this year, and we’re having a hard time disagreeing. The expectations from the To-Kalon Vineyard are high, and this wine delivers on that, especially given that the wines from here tend to be very powerful, and seemingly weightless too. A remarkable balance is struck – there’s crème de cassis, some red, but mostly blackberries, spice box, cigar box, forest floor and earthiness, and a luxurious mouthfeel. Aged with slightly more oak than the others given its density, the To-Kalon is able to absorb it easily, and the final structure is capable of aging effortlessly for decades.  (Less than 300 cases made.)

"Pure perfection, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Lithology Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard is a nuclear fruit bomb of a wine, offering massive richness and depth while being as graceful as a ballerina, with no sensation of weight or heaviness. Classic To-Kalon crème de cassis, black raspberries, flowery incense, spice, and tobacco notes all define the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied, with a layered, multi-dimensional texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. It has another 2-3 decades of prime drinking ahead of it. This cuvée is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from four blocks in To-Kalon, aged 20 months in 82% new French oak." - 1/27/2021

Called “…some of the finest Cabernet Franc in the world…” and “thrilling…do not miss…” by Jeb Dunnuck who awarded this 99 points and continued “I’m probably underrating this by a point…”  This is without a doubt the greatest Cabernet Franc we’ve ever produced.  There is a stunning array of aromas typical of this variety, including wildflowers, violets, tobacco, crème de cassis, and dark berries.  The tannins are fine, and smooth, despite this being a full-throttle, full-bodied and thrilling wine.
